With Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde, Tate Modern presents the first major exhibition in the UK devoted to the Dutch artist, Theo Van Doesburg, founder of the De Stijl movement and magazine. This is a rare chance for van Doesburg's work - spanning several artistic disciplines from typography to stained glass, film to music - to be seen on these shores. The De Stijl artistic movement drew together painters, architects and designers in search of a new society in the aftermath of World War I. Theirs was a distinct style of art and design and van Doesburg held a key role promoting the movement and Dutch Neoplasticism while trying to exert his influence on the Bauhaus. This exhibition includes over 350 works by important artists working alongside van Doesburg including Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Piet Mondrian. The exhibition features van Doesburg's rarely-seen Counter-Composition paintings and designs for the Cafe Aubette in Stasbourg, furniture such as Rietveld's iconic Red-Blue chair.
