Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals

Nearby Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals

Canaletto, the Venetian painter famous for his landscapes, or vedute, of Venice, is the star of the National Gallery's display of Venetian views, Venice: Canaletto and His Rivals. Bringing together some of Canaletto's greatest masterpieces, and juxtaposing them with those of his rivals, this major exhibition features around 55 paintings highlighting the huge apetite for the subject in the 18th century. Well known paintings like Canaletto's views of 'The Riva degli Schiavoni, looking West' are compared to the works of Luca Carlevarijs, Gaspar van Witell, Michele Marieschi, Bernardo Bellotto, and Francesco Guardi. By contrasting how the different artists portrayed the same, or similar, views of the city - the Grand Canal and the Doge's Palace - the exhibition demonstrates the rich variety of stylistic approaches, all dated within the same 100-year period. Considering this was a trend was largely driven by the tastes of British collectors during their Grand Tour, it's surprising that this is the first exhibition to focus on the subject to be held in the UK.About National Gallery
The National Gallery dominates London's Trafalgar Square with its neo-classical columns and portico designed by William Wilkins adjoining the square on its east side where it has been pedestrianised. Some of the finest examples of European art, ranging from 1260 to 1900, are included among the 2,300 paintings filling its halls and rooms. More about National Gallery
