Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and LeisureTwo musical Vermeer paintings owned by the National Gallery, 'Young Woman Standing at a Virginal' and 'Young Woman Seated at a Virginal', are brought together with Vermeer's 'Guitar Player' for the first time in an exhibition displayed in the gallery's Sainsbury Wing. By juxtaposing paintings by Vermeer and his contemporaries with musical instruments and songbooks of the period Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure gives visitors an insight into music as a pastime of the elite in the northern Netherlands during the 17th century. We also discover how music was often a metaphor, used for symbolic purposes, to indicate harmony, transience or to show the sitter's position in society. Visitors can also enjoy live performances in the exhibition space by the Academy of Ancient Music three days a week, bringing the paintings to life with music of the period.
