Vikings: Life And LegendWeapons, coins, jewellery and the surviving timbers of a 37-metre-long Viking warship go on display at the British Museum's brand new Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery which opens in March 2014. The first major exhibition on Vikings at the British Museum for over 30 years features weapons and looted treasures showing the central role which warfare played in the identity of the Scandinavian warriors. Exhibits include recently excavated skeletons from a mass grave of executed Vikings near Weymouth in Dorset, and The Vale of York Hoard - shown in its entirety at the British Museum for the first time since it was discovered near Harrogate in 2007. These hoards, artefacts and religious icons give visitors an overarching insight into how the Vikings created an international network connecting cultures over four continents, contributing to the development of the early Russian state.

About British Museum

If you wanted to thoroughly explore the British Museum, it would take months, if not years. Over seven millions objects from all over the world are housed in this impressive museum of human history and culture (many of the artefacts are stored underneath the museum due to lack of space).
