Celebrating the bicentenary of one of classical music's most revolutionary operatic composers, Wagner 200 is a wide-ranging, London-based festival that runs from early summer right through to late December. Best known for his operas Die Walküre, Tristan und Isolde and his famous Ring Cycle, Wagner was also a theatre director, polemicist and conductor. Wagner 200 opens on Wednesday 22nd May 2013 with a Wagner Birthday Concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra and a stellar cast under Sir Andrew Davis at the Royal Festival Hall. It continues with further concerts, screenings of opera performances, public masterclasses, symposia, a curated film season, an exhibition and much more, at leading venues including the Royal Opera House, Barbican Centre, Royal Albert Hall, Kings Place and British Library. Just 150 metres from King's Cross and St Pancras stations and with a waterside setting, the Dixon-Jones designed Kings Place combines the offices of The Guardian newspaper with a concert hall and two art galleries. As you'd expect from the architects behind the recent improvements to the Royal Opera House and National Portrait Gallery it's a well designed complex of curvaceous surfaces and appealing public spaces.
