We Are Proud to Present...
THIS EVENT ENDED ON THE 12TH APRIL 2014
An usher takes you in through the back door of the Bush Theatre before We Are Proud to Present... begins, inviting the audience to look around the rehearsal room, to immerse yourself in the rather uncomfortable subject at hand: genocide. Reading Wikipedia entries, we can also see images of the Herero people, 80 per cent of whom, we later learn, were wiped out. This is a play about a group of actors putting on a play about the German occupation of Sudwestafrika from 1884-1915 and it does so with some humour, plenty of improv, discussion, and increasingly heated arguments. There's excellent acting from the cast of six - which includes Ayesha Antoine as group leader, and Kingsley Ben-Adir - who ad lib a brilliant and humourous jamming session. There are frustrating moments when the lights come up - just when we were getting into a meaty bit of the story - stopping the action for a present-day discussion among the actors. But when the dramatic climax comes it reveals what the play has been getting at - that these issues are not only in the past - and there's a horribly long awkward pause at the end which leaves you feeling mighty uncomfortable and a bit confused about what just happened.
