This play created waves down under when it received its world premiere at the Adelaide Festival of Arts last year, celebrated as "unabashed and ambitious theatre" (Stage Noise) and a landmark for Australian drama. Now arriving at the Almeida Theatre for its European premiere, When the Rain Stops Falling is expected to bring "its intelligence and multi-layered brilliance" (Sydney Theatre Company) to London under the ingenuity of artistic director Michael Attenborough. Writer Andrew Bovell (Speaking in Tongues and films Lantana and Strictly Ballroom) has created an impressive sweep of a play, crossing London, the southern coast of Australia and into the desert over the course of 80 years to explore the effect of the past on the future. But the play is not just a domino effect of linear events but an intricate web of individual lives spun together - a result of Bovell's "complex, subtle plotting" (Stage Noise) that links love, loss, betrayal, mystery and misplaced loyalty across the generations to reveal a burning family - and universal - history.
