They don't seem to be the happiest 20-somethings do White Lies, the band formerly known as Fear of Flying. Invariably clad in black, the West London three-piece sing of death, funerals and love lost with lead singer Harry McVeigh's Joy Division-style baritone leading the line with aplomb. So far, so gloomy. But here are some home truths about White Lies: winding up their unspectacular indie outfit Fear of Flying was the second best thing they ever did - outdone only by their debut album To Lose My Life, which shot to the top of the UK charts. Despite the constant misery of their mope-rock, White Lies are far more uplifting and euphoric than fellow doom merchants Editors or Interpol while the chorus of the album title track is as anthemic as anything the Killers have written. To cap a meteoric rise to the top, White Lies now perform back-to-back gigs at the Brixton Acadamy. The subject matter may be rather morose, but this group's songs are epic as they are life-affirming. Next stop, this stadium rock is arena-bound.
