Until recently the best thing to come out of Kendal was its famous mint cake. Now Cumbrian offbeat indie quartet Wild Beasts look set to change that following the release of their critically acclaimed second album, Two Dancers ("a treasure that deserves plundering," according to NME). Wild Beasts roamed onto the scene with their playful debut single 'Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants' and became instantly recognisable by lead singer Hayden Thorpe's seedy falsetto (think Billy Mackenzie meets Sparks). If the band's Steve Lemacq-championed debut record Limbo Panto was labelled "outrageously ostentatious" by The Guardian, it was also described as "wonderfully, magically strange" by NME. The follow up was hailed as "one of 2009's indisputable masterpieces" (The Sunday Times), with Thorpe's often overpowering voice tempered nicely by guitarist Tom Fleming's rich, sonorous, northern tones. Single 'We Still Got the Taste Dancin' on Our Tongues' is a delightful piece of music on all levels, a tale of insatiable lust and louche adventures in the band's inimitable style, and should have the house down both nights for these two gigs at Camden's KOKO.4th March: Support from Erland And The Carnival & Lone Wolf
22nd March: Support from Everything Everything & Esben And The Witch
About KOKO
KoKo offers a great mixture of live bands and club nights that have put it at the heart of the Camden nightlife. The huge stage, broad balconies and plush upstairs bars are a reminder of its former role as the Camden Theatre (which originally opened its doors in 1900), and the deep red colour scheme, chandeliers and gilt molding give it a decadent air that matches the rock stars who grace the stage.
