Written on SkinGeorge Benjamin introduced himself to the world of musical theatre with 'Into the Little Hill'. This 2006 collaboration with dramatist Martin Crimp was a 40-minute contemporary retelling of the fairytale story 'Pied Piper'. Now, working with Crimp once more, Benjamin has braved a full-scale piece. After a well received premiere at the 2012 Festival d'Aix-en-Provence 'Written on the Skin' will now arrive at the Royal Opera House for an eagerly anticipated run. Set in 13th-century Provence, the story follows The Protector, who invites a scribe known as The Boy into his home and commissions a manuscript. However, when The Boy gets a little too close to the Protectors wife, an unimaginably violent tale runs its course. The story of love, passion and violence is given a unique contemporary twist as it is narrated by three angels who are placed in present day. The Guardian described Benjamin's score as "more impassioned, more sensuously beautiful and, at times, more fiercely dramatic than anything he has written before."

About Royal Opera House

This impressive building in the heart of Covent Garden has been playing host to major stars of the classical music world since 1858. The third theatre to be located on this site, today's Royal Opera House is the result of a reconstruction in the 1990s (although the main auditorium is part of the original building).
