The young Russian pianist Yevgeny Sudbin performs a night of Chopin at Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the Southbank Centre's International Series. Still not yet 30, Sudbin has been hailed as potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century. By the age of 10, he had won his first international piano competition before moving to Berlin with his family, and then England, to study at the Purcell School and Royal Academy of Music. His stunning CD releases of Scarlatti and Rachmaninov a few years back had one critic claiming he was "one of the most important pianistic talents of our time" and another praise him for his "fingers of steel and heart of gold". In July 2008 he made his Proms debut to critical acclaim and he is now lauded worldwide for his sensitivity, originality and imagination. This concert features an all-Chopin first half followed by a tribute to the Polish composer by the marvellous Ronald Stevenson and Ravel's beautifully evocative Gaspard de la Nuit.Programme:
Chopin: Fantasia in F minor, Op.49
Chopin: Ballade No.3 in A flat, Op.47
Chopin: Mazurka in F minor, Op.7 No.3
Chopin: Mazurka in B minor, Op.33 No.4
Chopin: Ballade No.4 in F minor, Op.52
Interval
Ronald Stevenson: Fugue on a fragment of Chopin
Liszt: 12 Etudes d'execution transcendante, S.139 - No.11 (Harmonies du soir)
Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit
About Southbank Centre
The Southbank Centre is a classic example of brutal 60s concrete architecture. Everyone has an opinion (usually negative) on its distinctive design - famous detractors include Prince Charles, who once described it as looking like a "nuclear power station". Yet, if the The West End is the centre of popular culture in London, it is the Southbank Centre that is the centre of true excellence in the arts. More about Southbank Centre
