Yinka Shonibare: Globe Head Ballerina
Nearby

A new piece of artwork by Yinka Shonibare will be displayed on the exterior of the Royal Opera House this June. Globe Head Ballerina - inspired by a photograph of the prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn and modelled upon Royal Ballet Soloist Melissa Hamilton - is a sculpture that sees a life size ballerina encased within a giant snow globe. Overlooking Covent Garden, the dancer will slowly rotate representing a moment captured from the stage of the Royal Opera House. The public commission, produced by UP Projects on the behalf of the Royal Opera House, will remain in situ on the exterior of the building overlooking Russell Street for five years.
About Royal Opera House
This impressive building in the heart of Covent Garden has been playing host to major stars of the classical music world since 1858. The third theatre to be located on this site, today's Royal Opera House is the result of a reconstruction in the 1990s (although the main auditorium is part of the original building).
