Founded in 1966 as a publishing house, New Beacon Books was named after the 'The Beacon' magazine, a cultural publication from 1930s Trinidad which gives some indication of the specialist books stocked here. Since the beginning John La Rose set up the bookshop to provide an outlet for the culture, history and politics of Black Britain and Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, African America and Asia. Multi-ethnic children's books are also available at this well-known bookshop at Finsbury Park where just some of the 35,000 books available are displayed.
