Established in 1776, Christie’s holds sales ranging from Old Masters to the contemporary arts. In 1990 it broke all records with the sale Van Gogh’s Portrait of Doctor Gachet for $82,500,000. More recently it raised $13,378,558 for the Rothschild Prayerbook, an extremely rare bible with illuminated manuscripts. The gallery at King Street is open to the public without charge and offers ever-changing exhibitions. There is also a bookshop on the premises.
