Founded in 1948 to promote and champion British craft, Contemporary Applied Arts operates a modern gallery space at 89 Southwark Street as a showcase of the work of more than 300 creative members, from established names to recent graduates. Showing contemporary ceramics, glass, textiles, wood,
precious and non-precious jewellery, furniture and metal from Britain, the gallery has an annual programme of changing exhibitions as well as one-off special events. Notable exhibitions have included a retrospective of work by contemporary jewellery maker Barbara Christie, an exhibition dedicated to the best contemporary glass works featuring 26 selected artists, and a summer exhibition which included images of London 2012's Olympic Medals designed by Contemporary Applied Arts member David Watkins.
