Since the Middle Ages the Guildhall has been the centre of Government for the City of London. The current building has stood in the geographical centre of the Square Mile since 1411. It holds the accolade of being the only stone secular building to survive first the Great Fire and then the Blitz. It's seen plenty of additions and renovations some easier on the eye than others but the Great Hall retains much of its original grandeur, including two statues of the pagan giants Gog and Magog. The opulent interior is festooned with the shields of the livery companies and features memorials to prominent figures from Nelson to Churchill. It's worth signing up for a guided tour of the crypt, the earliest part of the building, which dates back to the 12th century.Guildhall events
