The famous heritage site at Duxford began as an airfield in World War One and also played a vital role in World War Two, firstly as an RAF fighter station and later as an American fighter base. Now part of the Imperial War Museum, there are over 140 aircraft on display at Duxford, including tanks, vehicles, guns, a ride simulator and adventure playground. The American Air Museum in the striking glass and chrome building next door serves as a memorial to the American airmen who fought and gave their lives flying from UK bases. It displays the largest collection of American war planes outside the United States. A relatively new attraction is AirSpace (opened summer 2007), a site covering almost three acres, so the museum is large enough to house Concorde - as well as 29 other aircraft under one roof. Beautiful old war planes include the first British jet bomber, used by the RAF in the Suez Canal Campaign of 1956, and the Avro Lancaster, made famous by the Dam Busters raid in May 1943 which was made into a film of the same title. A day out at Duxford is great fun for the kids and educational displays are made interesting by using computers, video, sound and plenty of objects for youngsters to handle. Their regular air shows are a great way to see these historic flying machines in action - often with a fireworks display for the grand finale.
