Kelmscott House, William Morris's home from 1878-96, is a private house and not open to the public. The basement and coach house, however, (entrance down steps leading from driveway) serve as headquarters for the William Morris Society and are open for limited periods. Kelmscott House was the last home of the famous poet, artist, manufacturer, and socialist who died at the house on 3 October 1896. In 1890 William Morris founded the Kelmscott Press in premises nearby where sixty-six volumes were printed, the most impressive of which was its magnificent edition of Chaucer, published in 1896.
