Lambeth Palace is one of the few medieval buildings left in London. It is also the last survivor of the great London seats of the Bishops located along the South Bank of the Thames. The Archbishop of Canterbury has owned it since about 1200, and it remains his London residence. The Palace is not open to the general public however tours may be arranged by contacting the bookings department. The garden has several open days throughout the year. Within the palace grounds is the Lambeth Palace Library - the principal library and record office for the history of the Church of England, founded in 1610 - which is freely available to members of the public with a formal letter of introduction from an academic supervisor, vicar or the like.
