It may be in south west London, in the London borough of Merton, but a walk around Morden Hall Park feels like an outing to the countryside. The National Trust owned site includes 125 acres of parkland and a restored stable block, renovated as part of an eco friendly project, which houses a visitor information centre, a small cafe and craft stalls. The river meanders through the former deer park while the snuff mills, which were used to grind tobacco, still survive - the western mill having been renovated into a learning centre. There's a lovely rose garden beside Morden Cottage and some of the surviving estate buildings are used as workshops by local craftspeople and artisans. The park, donated to the National Trust by Gilliat Edward Hatfeild in 1941, is free to enjoy, as was stipulated in his will: "my Morden estate shall be open to the public for the benefit of the local community".
