NOTE: THE LOWER GALLERIES - WHICH EXPLORE LONDON'S HISTORY FROM 1666 ONWARDS - ARE CLOSED UNTIL 2010. SIGNIFICANT WORKS ARE TAKING PLACE WHICH MAY DISRUPT YOUR VISIT.
Experience the real flavour of London life from the prehistoric to present day at this modern museum boasting over 1.1 million objects – many rescued from archaeological digs or discovered during building works in the City. The museum has a permanent display on the Great Fire of 1666 as well as the 'London before London' exhibition and collections from Roman times up until the 17th century. A chain of chronological galleries guide visitors through the history of this ancient city; you can explore the story from 450,000BC to the founding of Londinium in AD50 and see the old bones of a skeleton aged between 5640 and 5100 years old. 47,000 objects from Roman London including some stunning marble sculptures from the Temple of Mithras show how this great empire paved the way for the city as we know it. Don't miss fragments of the old London Wall located just outside the museum.

Did you know?
Built in 1757, the Lord Mayor’s Coach built on display in the museum is still taken out and used every year for the city’s Lord Mayor’s Show. |
