King George III's country retreat.
Built in 1772 and nestled among bluebell woods, Queen Charlotte’s Cottage was used regularly by the royal family as a cooling summer house hideaway. Kew Gardens – with its riverside setting, expansive 300-acre grounds, cooling glades and tropical glasshouses - forms an idyllic setting for both the palace and cottage. Admission to the palace and cottage is only available through the gardens - no great hardship since the gardens are just as formidable as the royal residences within. Make a day of it, explore the palace, wander around the gardens and have a picnic. Idyllic.
Best for:
Royal, rural retreats, King George III and Queen Charlotte, the monarchy and botany.
Did you know?
The last recorded royal stay at Kew was in 1844 when Queen Victoria left her children at the palace while in town with Court.
