- Visitor Information
Best known for its annual televised Christmas lectures, the RI is one of Britain's most famous science institutions and the place where famous scientists such as Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday, James Dewar and William and Lawrence Bragg - whose discoveries still impact our daily lives - have all been based. Established over 200 years ago, fourteen residents of the RI have received the Nobel Prize and ten chemical elements have been discovered by scientists working here. The Davy Faraday Research Laboratory is based at the RI and the Science Media Centre is nearby in the renovated premises of Number 19 Albemarle Street. The Media Centre provides the print and broadcast media with access to in-depth information on science-related issues, its aim to forge links and a greater understanding between scientists and journalists. Regular events open to the public include lectures by eminent scientists on topics like 'The truth about OCD', magnetic healing and looking for life on Mars. A recent ?22 million redevelopment has transformed the RI, restoring its old rooms and the 440-seat Faraday Theatre and overseeing the introduction of a delightful café, bar and restaurant - Time & Space - and a new exhibition potting the history of the institution. With the refurbishment has come a reinvigorated calendar of events catering for people of all ages and interests.
