This is one of London's most important contemporary art exhibition spaces, having shown artists such as Gilbert and George, Tracey Emin, Mark Quinn and Julian Schnabel under David Thorp's directorship from 1992-2001. The South London Gallery (SLG) can trace its roots as far back as 1868 when South London Working Men's College opened at 91 Blackfriars Road. However it only arrived at this venue on Peckham Road in 1891 when manager William Rossiter bought the freehold of Portland House on the site of what is now Camberwell College of Arts and built a new gallery in the grounds. Since 2001, with Margot Heller at the helm, recent shows have included Chris Burden, Christian Boltanski and the 'mad professor' Keith Tyson who, in 2002, won the Turner Prize on the strength of his SLG show. Improvements brought the addition of a street-facing cafe, three new exhibition spaces and accommodation for a residency programme. Further plans include a state-of-the-art education studio and seminar venue on the site of a building bombed during WWII which look onto artist-designed gardens.
