  • Visitor Information
Services are regularly held at St John-at-Hackney where a church has stood since 1275. The current building, however, dates back to 1797 when a new church replaced the original, dating back to the 14th century when the church was dedicated to St Augustine of Hippo. It was only after 1660 that it was rededicated to St John the Baptist, later becoming more commonly known as St John-at-Hackney. Today, the four and a quarter acres of the churchyard gardens are a green oasis in the heart of Hackney. Within the gardens is St Augustine's Tower, the Grade I listed building is the oldest in Hackney. The old tower has a symbolic and ceremonial role in the borough: it's been pictured on the masthead of the Hackney Gazette since its foundation in 1864 and is incorporated in the coat of arms of the London Borough of Hackney.
