These 40 acres of gardens include the restored Great Conservatory - a magnificent building of glass and Bath stone originally designed as a show house for the Duke's exotic plants. The 3rd Duke of Northumberland commissioned Charles Fowler to build the conservatory in 1826 and it inspired Joseph Paxton's designs for the Crystal Palace. Now the elaborate greenhouse is replanted with a succession of plants with a scented theme throughout the summer. The surrounding 'Capability' Brown designed parkland covers 200 acres and include a miniature steam railway which operates April to October at weekends, Bank Holidays, and by arrangement. There have been gardens at Syon for over 500 years which include herbaceus beds, a large lake and almost 200 species of rare trees. Unfortunately, the rose garden was washed away in a big storm in 2005.
