In the nineteenth century, Wilton's Music Hall was a great mirrored hall lit by a vast chandelier, with 27,000 crystals and 300 gas jets. Opera, operetta, variety shows and old-style music hall were played out to raucous cockney audiences of over 2000. Two good Christian women entering Wilton's in 1884 found the environment so diabolical that, it is chronicled "they fell down on their knees... and in view of the stage and crowd of onlookers, prayed that God would break the power of the devil in the place". They got their wish and it has been derelict for much of the second half of the twentieth century. It is now in use again, and, though a shadow of its former glory, is hugely evocative in its ruined grandeur. Today, Wilton's is used as a venue for musicals and dramas, and if you catch a costume drama on stage on a winter's night, why, you might as well be a Victorian gentleman (or lady) enjoying the theatre of a bygone era. A charming venue, and great fun.
