For those who really want to shake off every last vestige of the city and head for an endearing village location, Wimbledon Common is ideal. Near the middle of the common a windmill, dating from 1817, marks the spot where Baden-Powell wrote part of 'Scouting for Boys'. It’s now a small museum. Some nice old pubs are vdotted around the edge of the common, while Wimbledon Village with its quaint pubs, thriving delicatessens, antique shops and independent boutiques is just a short walk away. This is a great space for a relaxed stroll or a gentle horse-ride but most importantly Wimbledon Common is synonymous with the home of The Wombles - author Elizabeth Beresford's fictional litter collecting characters.
