The Museum of the Mind sits at the heart of and tells the history of Bethlem Royal Hospital which was founded in 1247 and continues to provide care for the mentally ill. Bethlem's archives and museum, based in the original administration building at the heart of the Bethlem Royal Hospital site, houses gallery and learning spaces and the building's grand art-deco staircase provides a fitting showcase for the world renowned statues of 'Raving' and 'Melancholy Madness', which originally stood above the gates of 17th century Bedlam. The Museum of the Mind opened at this location on 19th February 2015 which an exhibition by Bryan Charnley on 'The Art of Schizophrenia' and items from the permanent collection which includes around 1,000 works, paintings, drawings, ceramics and textiles.
