Up until 1750 London Bridge was the only bridge straddling the Thames and linking Southwark (the 'South Works') with Londinium. The bridge, in its various incarnations, has been built and re-built, destroyed by fire - three times - and sold since it was first constructed in 53 AD. It even has its own nursery rhyme, 'London Bridge is falling down...', most likely originating from a tussle in 1014 when the Norwegian king Olaf had the bridge torn down while making a successful bid to regain London for the Anglo-Saxon king Aethelred. Famously, the bridge was 'sold to the Americans' who allegedly mistakenly thought they were buying the more imposing Tower Bridge next door. Not true, say some, but it makes a good story. The bridge, designed by John Rennie and bought by Robert P. McCulloch was reconstructed at Lake Havasu City, Arizona and can still be seen there, spanning a man-made canal from Lake Havasu to Thomson Bay. Part of an English style theme park, it's Arizona's second-biggest tourist attraction, after the Grand Canyon. Take the London Bridge Experience and see the history of the bridge brought to life through special effects, CGI, actors and animation.
