Maggie's Centre next to Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith is the first cancer care hospice in England (there are several more in Scotland) for this charitable group. The Rogers Stirk Harbour designed day care centre is the winner of the 2009 Stirling Prize, the prestigious award given each year by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Richard Rogers' London-based practice designed Maggie's Centre "based on an embrace", as an open house where people can feel secure, enjoying the kitchen at the heart of the building. The raised roof allows plenty of natural light in while the bright orange colour is uplifting and welcoming. Although beautiful from the inside, we can't help noticing that from the street view it looks like they left the builders' hoarding up! A landscaped garden on three sides of the building helps to create an oasis in the city and each of the rooms opens onto an internal garden space.
