Marshalsea Prison

- Visitor Information
Little remains of the once famous Marshalsea Prison and all that is left can be seen on one side of a pathway leading to Southwark Local Studies Library. This four-metre-high, red brick wall with its two original gate arches used to be the prison's southern boundary, now marked by a plaque which informs us that the prison closed in 1842. The small structure is a Grade II listed building. Not much to look at now, the prison was once well known and is described in detail by Charles Dickens in 'Little Dorrit'. Dickens had first hand experience of the gaol as his father was imprisoned here for debt in 1824. Opposite the prison site is the church of St George the Martyr, built in 1734 which is commonly known as 'Little Dorrit's Church' after the character in Dickens' tale.
