Pond Square in Highgate Village is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a chicken! Legend has it that in 1626 Sir Francis Bacon used a hen as part of an early experiment in refrigeration, and said hen has haunted Pond Square ever since. As its name suggests the square is on the site of an old pond, long since filled in. Now covered with trees the square adds to the leafy appeal of Highgate Village and has The Flask, Highgate's most popular pub, at one end. It's also home to the Highgate Society which aims to conserve the historic nature of the village.
