Visitor Information
T he biggest enclosed docks in the world, with around 250 acres of water, the Royal Docks encompass three docks, built between 1855 and 1921: the Royal Victoria Dock, the King George V Dock and - the largest - the Royal Albert Dock. A thriving city within a city in Victorian times, the area had three miles of quayside welcoming ships from around the world and an entrance to the River Thames at Gallions Reach . Bombed in the Second World War and closed to commercial traffic in 1981, the Royal Docks are undergoing a regeneration which promises to bring the biggest change to east London since Canary Wharf, with homes for 60,000 people and £3.7 billion-worth of investment. Attractions in the area include the ExCeL convention centre, which hosts everything from Comic Con to the xx, the Thames Barrier Park and the Emirates Air Line, linking the Royal Docks to The O2 and North Greenwich.
