Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the most famous and most sought after architect of his day, St Mary Abbots Church on Kensington High Street is a fine cathedral-like church (it seats up to 700) broadly based on early decorated style. Sir George - the architect famous for designing the Foreign Office, Glasgow University, the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras railway station and the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, never did see the finished result. While the church was completed in early 1872 and consecrated on 14th May of that year, the spire and tower were not completed until seven and a half years later, a year after Scott's death. Characterised by a relatively plain interior in the main body, the church's chancel, altar and reredos - of alabaster, marble and Italian mosaics - are more elaborate. The exterior elements are excellently grouped and balanced, one of Scott's great architectural skills.
