The phrase ‘cocktail bar’ doesn’t generally evoke a positive image: all expense, pretension and little substance. But, this is doing a disservice to places like 25 Canonbury Lane.
This charming bar is a shining light in the gloomy mediocrity of Islington. Cramped or atmospheric, depending on your preference, it’s busy busy but the staff and customers always raise a smile. The neatly done, art-deco interior is easy on the eye with some attractive chandeliers and panelling. It’s obviously had some care put into it but it’s not overdone. If you appreciate a burst of sunshine, out the back there’s a conservatory and a small garden.
The Spanish have known for years and now bars over here are cottoning on to the fact that nibbling while drinking is pleasant and popular. Tapas have grown exponentially from their Iberian roots and now take in flavours from around the globe. 25 Canonbury Lane is leading the way, offering customers an eclectic, reasonably priced selection of snacks.
The staff are just as happy preparing standards from the lengthy and diverse cocktail list, as straying into uncharted territory, mixing novel blends of your choice.
