It sounds magnificent - décor based on the Indian Architecture of the Moghul period – but despite creating a fantastic, discreet atmosphere Akbar isn’t breaking any moulds.
Sumptuous and extravagant, Akbar’s interior, decorated by designers Fitch, is a spectacle for the eyes. Warm terracotta and sandstone are set off against flashes of black and red, with the stylish chrome bar slinking across one wall. Underneath the leather armchairs and low tables are natural stone floors, overlain with gorgeous rugs. The basement bar is bathed in afterglow. Split into a cluster of snug alcoves, it’s the perfect place to bring a date.
Behind the bar lives an all-embracing range of world spirits, from Icelandic Cucumber vodka to Chilean Pisco. They whip up a mean selection of modern cocktails too. Beer is limited to bottles of Kingfisher.
It’s no surprise that Akbar - run by the management of the renowned Redfort Restaurant, which it sits underneath - dish out a delectable array of contemporary Indian snacks.
Akbar is a lavishly decorated, atmospherically lit hollow where you can relax in company at your leisure. However, prices match the décor, with a service charge on top of that, so don’t get carried away.
