Named after the Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman, this wine bar - and the blue plaque nearby - is a reminder that the writer lived here at Number 43 Cloth Fair, Smithfield, for some years until 1971. His old house is now owned by the Landmark Trust and the top two floors are available to rent. In what used to be Betjeman's study is now a wine bar and restaurant, part of the Jamie's wine bar chain. Located in Cloth Fair, this is an historic part of town - the street gets its name from medieval times when merchants used to buy and sell material during Bartholomew Fair. In the shadow of the beautiful church of St Bartholomew the Great (used as a set in Shakespeare in Love), Betjeman's serves meals like potted crayfish with poached quails egg and sausage and mash along with an extensive wine list, a selection of which are sold by the glass.
