The original and arguably one of London's best gastropubs, the Eagle in Farringdon is a happy, bustling place where top notch food is served without the white tablecloths. When David Eyre and Mike Belben founded the place in 1991 the term 'gastropub' was unheard of - hard to imagine now there's a multitude of imitators (and even Gordon Ramsay has got in on the act). Specialising in Mediterranean food with an Iberian influence, dishes are lovingly prepared and served in huge portions by friendly happy staff. The interior is true traditional pub, rustic and wooden - from the floorboards to the bar as well as rickety tables and chairs. The winning formula has been extended to equally well loved sister gastropubs the Anchor & Hope near Waterloo in Southwark and Great Queen Street, Covent Garden, both backed by the same team. Ex-Eagle chef Tom Norrington-Davies, for example, runs the kitchen at Great Queen Street managed by Rob Shaw who moved from the Anchor & Hope. Mike Belben, co-founder of the Eagle is also an investor in the excellent Great Queen Street.
