This renovated traditional pub in the heart of Clerkenwell has been serving the traders of nearby Smithfields Market for years. Under the Malmaison umbrella - the hotel outfit who run the more chic boutique hotel down the street - it's a pub that does food and has rooms. Their strapline 'Hops & Chops, Cuvees & Duvets' succinctly sums it up. As well as chops the menu, devised by Malmaison's executive chef and cooked up by a staff of three chefs, includes lamb shank and herb-baked queen scallops in garlic butter. But do note that food is served Mondays to Fridays only. The interior features dark wood, mahogany doors, etched glass and heavy brass offering a relaxing place to enjoy their range of real ales. Stay in any of the six rooms at the Fox & Anchor and you'll get added luxuries like a drench shower, roll-top bath, Miller Harris toiletries, plasma screen, DVD player and Bose sound system.
