The Lord Palmerston is a rarity: a gastropub that doesn’t think it’s a restaurant. Tucked out of the way, on Dartmouth Park Road, this place is a gastropub in the full sense of the word. Inside the Palmerston remains very much a local pub. Regulars chat at the bar, a dog naps in the corner, the bar man is a friendly local face. It’s a pub you can easily go in to for a quiet pint after work. What the Palmerston manages to do so successfully is balance the homely pub image with really great food. The blackboard menu has a few steady favourites (the steak and chips with aioli and mussels being particularly good) but the majority of the choices change regularly depending on the seasons and the markets. Red Snapper, Duck, Cod, Lamb are often there and are always well cooked and cleverly partnered with seasonal vegetables. With an atmosphere that is as laid-back and unpretentious as the menu, it’s a great place to have a good meal, a quiet drink or both. Enjoy.
