The Macbeth is fast growing the reputation as Hoxton's best alternative venue largely thanks to its ever-expanding array of top music nights. The actual venue leaves a lot to be desired: if the blue and beige-tiled facade isn't enough to put you off, then the naff furniture and borderline-grotesque loos certainly are. But then you realise that the place is a dive intentionally - and you see the crowds of trendies (plus the odd celebrity) queuing up to get in. The music programme is varied as it is excellent - jazz nights, house raves, musical poetry, new indie bands, you name it. There is even a classical/dance hybrid event every first Wednesday of the month called Nonclassical. The Macbeth is slightly off the beaten track, but people in the know are increasingly walking on past the bustling Hoxton Square and making their way to this arty hangout for local creatives. Worth trying it out and it has a late licence - but best make sure you don't need the loo.The Macbeth events
