Built in 1845, The Morpeth Arms is said to be haunted by a long dead prisoner who used to be locked up at the nearby Millbank prison. Escaping captivity the prisoner is thought to have died in the tunnels that run beneath the pub. There are several versions on the theme, one is that the ghost is a convict who hung himself to deportation to Australia. Under the ownership of Youngs it's a traditional pub serving cask ales and speciality beers as well as English food. A convenient watering hole for visitors to the Tate, it overlooks the river with a small outside seating area on the busy road - head upstairs to get the best river views. Just beware of the ghostly presence - there have been reports of bottles being knocked out of drinkers' hands and smashed on the ground.Opening and closing times for Morpeth Arms
