Positioned just off Covent Garden Piazza, this restaurant aims to please those with a love for the stodgy comfort food of our native isle. The selection of iconic dishes harks back to your mum’s kitchen and the school canteen whilst the interior shouts ye olde pubbe.
Tuck into one of the notorious pies. Steak and mushroom is a perennial favourite, but we enjoyed the shepherd’s and fish varieties just as much. There’s not a great deal to champion for vegetarians, but the selection of meaty staples like steak and kidney pudding and faggots will have carnivores rejoicing in an orgy of offal. The fish and chips were a good catch too.
Puddings, again an old school selection, included a fruity bread and butter pudding, crunchy crumble and forgotten favourite spotted dick.
For a reminder of food before we looked beyond our shores, or an introduction to British cuisine, this is a good value option. There are more upmarket options to explore but Porter’s is noteworthy for its convenient location and cheery service.
