Tucked away in the village backstreets of Hampstead, The Old White Bear (formerly Ye Olde White Bear) is the second venture from restaurateur Jasper Gorst, proprietor of The Oak in Notting Hill. The inside has been done up in 19th century handmade English pine for the dressers, tables and fireplaces while colourful tiles imported from northern France for floor and tables create a rustic European/English feel. There's a European feel to the menu too with French, Spanish and Italian classics on a menu which starts with basic fare like seasonal soup of the day and venison ravioli, pecorino and thyme, followed by creme brulee for pudding. Added to that is a good selection of vegetarian options, such as vegetable antipasti with grilled marinated aubergine, courgette, peppers and globe artichoke. Traditional roasts are served on Sundays. For liquid refreshment - this is a pub, after all - there's a choice of guest ales are on tap and there's something on the wine list to suit all budgets - settle in with your drinks at one of the cosy bay windows, the bar, or (in the summer) tables outside. The Old White Bear images
