A pub that's unsure of its identity can be truly awful, but the invitingly named Settle Inn is a hotchpotch of English, Thai, traditional and modern elements that, due to some strange symbiosis, really works.
The interior is trying to get the stripped pine look of every other bar in London, but it fails in rather charming fashion. The pine hasn't been stripped down quite enough, the tables aren't quite polished enough (the furniture could well have been retained from some previous incarnation), and not one of the drinkers has a mullet or a pink t-shirt. A gaggle of locals huddles at the bar chatting away brusquely, glancing at the sport on the screens dotted about the pub. There's an agreeable pub quiz some nights; a breath of fresh air with its no entry fee, token prizes attitude.
In the back of the pub they've contracted the kitchen out to a Thai takeaway, which also supplies the pub's patrons. What comes out of the cramped looking open kitchen is very reasonably priced, authentic Thai cuisine. I was practically licking clean my bowl of lip-smacking, hunger-sapping red curry.
