Their extensive wine list is a veritable treat for connoisseurs and aspiring novices alike; there are 100 wines available by the glass and over 300 wines, ports, sherries, manzanillas and brandies by the bottle. From the rather exotic-sounding Lebanese Chateau Musar to the more everyday Chardonnays, the Wine Wharf delivers in the drinks department. Even if you don’t fancy wine, there’s a liberal assortment of beer, coffee and soft drinks available too.
The chefs get busy in the kitchen, dishing up a range of bar-bites and full meals. Their Welsh rarebit – cheese on toast with a Celtic twist – is particularly good.
The atmosphere’s not half bad either. Unlike many wine bars there’s no pretension; it’s informal (no dress code) and laid-back with comfy sofas and subtle lighting. From the ouside historical - housed inside what was originally a Victorian railway engineering works - but inside the design has a likeable, contemporary feel. Sup on your favoured tipple to a buoyant jazz and blues soundtrack.
Well located - a few minutes stroll from London Bridge tube - it could be the perfect stop-off after a few hours taking in the Tate Modern.
The Wine Wharf can be hired out and Vinopolis also organise wine tours, tastings and corporate events.
Nearby attractions: Southwark Cathedral, Globe Theatre, Tate Modern
