Located where it is, Waxy’s is fairly predictable. It’s expensive, it’s busy and it’s got a fair smattering of tourists, but it also has that certain something lacking in other venues in the vicinity.
The entrance is on Rupert Street but this mammoth pub spills back to what feels like Hyde Park. This wooden honeycomb of merriment is a jubilant mishmash split on six level - there are four bars each with a different feel... there’s even a tree growing inside.
The bar serves just about whatever you want, even a Beamish on draught, and the food's not bad either.
Tim Barton entertains with his own idiosyncratic blend of comedy and music on Monday and Tuesday nights, while on Sundays from 7:30 it’s live Irish folk music. Big screens show all the sporting action.
If you’re heading down the pub with a large group after work or on a night out Waxy’s is a decent option. Forget it if you are after a quiet chat, you’d be better of checking out the more subdued Waxy’s Little Sister opposite.
