Built in 1882 this gorgeous Victorian pub could be the perfect spot for a night out, if you can find it, that is. Very close to Hyde Park and Piccadilly Circus, it is tucked away in the secluded Mayfair refuge of Shepherd's Market. In the narrow streets dotted with boutique shops and classy brasseries, you feel a million miles away from the hubbub of central London. However, this village atmosphere is really only a five minute walk. Inside the decor is a fantastic example of olde England, but betrays none of the pub's racy past as a centre of Victorian prostitution. Those days are long gone. The interior is as dark and atmospheric as you'd expect, with plenty of snug inglenooks where you can cosy up with your companions, not to mention the carved grapes on every free corner or edge. The high, dark ceilings and wood-panelled walls are hung with all manner of historic bric-a-brac; flintlocks, stuffed animals, and horns dangle interestingly. If the weather is fair, the customers from Ye Grapes and the neighbouring pubs spill out into the square creating a boisterous convivial atmosphere. They serve a decent range of well kept real ale, as well as the usual tipples. The menu is packed with delicious traditional fare to satisfy any stomach.
