The Berners Hotel has been closed since January 2006 to make way for an "ambitious refurbishment programme" estimated to cost ?31 million. The upgrade includes significant demolition works and structural alterations, and the addition of new guest rooms on the seventh floor. Located just off Oxford Street in the heart of the West End, the building was first opened in 1835 and converted into a hotel at the turn of the 20th century. The grade II listed building has retained original 1830's features including the highly ornate ceilings in the marble-clad lobby and restaurant. "A wizard with a piping bag and an endless supply of cream-coloured icing could not have produced anything so fanciful," according to the Evening Standard. Good news then that these historic features are to be restored to their former glory during this extensive refurbishment.
